From Fixed Laboratories to Field Testing: How Mobile Labs Bring Analysis Closer to the Sample

Traditional laboratories provide controlled environments for testing, but they depend on samples being collected, transported and processed at a fixed location. In many field situations, this can add time and make sample handling more difficult.

A mobile laboratory offers another approach by taking testing capability closer to the source. Instead of sending every sample back to a central facility, a purpose-built mobile van can support selected analytical work directly at or near the sampling location.

Bringing Testing Capability into the Field

The main advantage of a vehicle-based lab is mobility. Testing resources can be positioned closer to environmental sites, industrial facilities, remote projects or emergency locations rather than remaining tied to one building.

This can shorten the distance between sample collection and analysis while giving field teams greater flexibility in how and where testing is carried out.

Reducing the Time Between Sampling and Analysis

When samples have to travel long distances, transportation and additional handling become part of the process.

A field testing unit can reduce some of these delays by allowing selected analysis to take place closer to the source. This can be useful when:

·         Samples require faster assessment

·         The project is far from a permanent laboratory

·         Transportation creates unnecessary delays

·         Teams need information while still on-site

·         Testing needs to move between different locations

BCL's earlier JISA showcase highlighted on-site testing as an important benefit of the concept, particularly for applications where faster access to results can support field decisions.

Reaching Locations with Limited Laboratory Access

Environmental monitoring, industrial inspections, emergency response and field research can take place far from established testing facilities.

A vehicle-based setup can extend analytical capability into these environments.

The JISA Mobile VAN previously presented by BCL was developed around a rugged vehicle platform, allowing laboratory resources to be transported between urban, rural and remote locations.

This approach can be particularly valuable for projects where building or accessing a permanent facility is not practical.

Working Alongside a Fixed Laboratory

Field-based testing does not need to replace a conventional laboratory.

Instead, the two can work together.

Selected tests can be completed on-site, while samples requiring more advanced analysis can still be transferred to a central facility. This creates a flexible workflow where:

·         Initial assessment can happen in the field

·         More complex samples can be referred for further analysis

·         Teams can receive useful information closer to the sampling point

·         Central laboratory resources can remain focused on specialized work

In this way, the field unit becomes an extension of existing testing capability.

Making Laboratory Testing More Flexible

The value of a mobile laboratory depends on the work it needs to support. For some projects, the main benefit is faster access to testing. For others, it is the ability to bring analytical resources into places where permanent infrastructure is unavailable.

Supporting Different Field Applications

Depending on how the unit is configured, field-based testing can support areas such as:

·         Environmental monitoring

·         Water and soil testing

·         Industrial field work

·         Emergency and disaster response

·         Remote project locations

·         Healthcare and diagnostic support

·         Education and field research

The equipment and internal setup can then be planned around the samples, analytical methods and operating environment.

The Vehicle Is Part of the Testing Environment

Creating a field lab involves more than installing instruments inside a van.

The internal design needs to consider practical requirements such as:

·         Working space

·         Equipment positioning

·         Sample handling

·         Storage

·         Power supply

·         Safety

·         Movement between sites

·         Conditions at the testing location

The JISA Mobile VAN brings these requirements together within a transportable platform, allowing the testing environment to move according to project needs.

Field Testing Solutions at ARABLAB 2026

ARABLAB LIVE 2026 will take place from 26–28 October 2026 at Dubai World Trade Centre, bringing together technologies for laboratory analysis, scientific research and field applications.

Business Communications LLC will be at Sheikh Saeed Hall 1, Stand SSH1-B40, presenting the JISA Mobile VAN as part of its scientific solutions showcase.

For environmental teams, industrial projects, emergency-response applications and other field-based work, the concept demonstrates how analytical capability can extend beyond the walls of a conventional laboratory.

By bringing selected testing resources closer to the point of sampling, field teams can create a more flexible connection between on-site work and central laboratory analysis.
